Transfer lock

Transfer lock

A transfer lock (transfer lock, registrar lock, or domain block) protects a domain name from theft or deletion. Without this option, fraudsters could steal the domain if they learn the AuthInfo code – they just give the code to a new registrar and it will transfer the domain name to them.

This option is available by default for all top-level domains – .com, .ru, and .net, although it is not available from all registrars.

Transfer lock prevents a domain name from falling into the wrong hands, but most often, users encounter a lock not when a domain gets stolen, but when they want to transfer it. For example, when transferring a domain or service rights to another domain registrar (provider).

What to do if a domain is blocked

You can remove a transfer lock in your personal cabinet or through the registrar's support service, but there are restrictions. The provider may restrict transfer based on the ICANN requirements:

  • if the domain was purchased less than 60 days ago;
  • if the registration period is about to expire or the domain has already expired;
  • if the domain delegation period is less than 15 days;
  • if the owner has independently changed the domain name status in Whois to fall under transfer lock.

After a request is received to remove transfer lock, the registrar sends an SMS or email to the domain owner and upon confirmation, the status will be removed in 5 days. The domain transfer itself may take up to 1 week. During the transfer of the domain name, the site will continue to operate normally.
